Dental Implants in Periodontitis-affected Patients; the Related Risk and Chance of Success

Advances in implant dentistry have provided thousands of completely and partially edentulous patients with a more functional and attractive alternative to fixed and removable prostheses. Although the long-term success of osseointegrated implants in periodontally healthy patients has been documented in various studies, implant treatment in individuals with periodontitis-associated tooth loss or in periodontally-compromised patients is still frequently debated.
This paper gives an update of the studies dealing with survival and success rates of dental implants in periodontitis-affected patients. An electronic search of the National Library of Medicine, (Medline-PubMed) between 2001 and 2009 looking for related reviews was also conducted.
It seems to be that individuals who had susceptibility to periodontal disease can be treated successfully with the dental implants. However, regular maintenance after implant installation in such patients is a must.
